For the Groom

The groom often has a limited role in the final creative direction of the wedding - if any role at all. Whether due to work schedules, living in a different city during the planning process, or from lack of interest in peonies and fabric swatches, he may only show enthusiasm in the music or what specialty cocktails are being served. One place your future husband can make his mark and not muck-up your design is the “After Lounge”.

I enjoy designing all aspects of a wedding, but I must admit it is refreshing and fun to create a lounge setting. Here you can dispense with conventional wisdom and let things fly a bit — and make him feel included at the same time. Make no mistake; a lounge can be a fantastic finish to long creative process and especially a place where you can focus on things that don’t have a spot anywhere else. Keep in mind a wedding is a metaphor for things to come and finding a place for pool tables and moose-heads is essential to harmony in your relationship.

Lounges are also places where you can both have a bit of a respite from the pressures of designing an entire ballroom or tent. Lounges can be whimsical or funky, chic or just plain fun. I thought it would be inspiring to share some of my favorite ideas. Try and keep in mind that for a fluid and successful design, fewer broad strokes are far more impactful than many little ones (a concept you will hear me repeat ad nauseum). Think about what he loves…sports cars, travel, dancing, food, or music. Maybe it isn’t just what he likes but where he is from. Below are a couple of concepts to consider and spark your creativity. Go ahead-be bold and give your guy a nod!

Because Paris is the groom’s favorite city. The key to the success of this design is 2 elements-red lounge furniture and gold mirrored plexi-glass. We cut plexi to fit the tops of the cocktail tables & a small dance-floor. Add a bit of lighting and great D.J. and voila!

Because the 60’s is his favorite era.

Lounges are a wonderful place to celebrate your heritage.-
