Last week I was conducting a site inspection on the other side of the country and had to plan a very romantic night in Manhattan to celebrate the birthday of my new beau. As you know, I am no slouch when it comes to finding my way around a restaurant- so my indecision with what restaurant to pick was driving me insane (as well as my staff!)
After the 4th restaurant reservation and a heap of apathy-I decided to bring in the big guns. I sent an urgent smoke signal to my pal Marcy Blum, with whom I share many divine gastronomic momemts. The request went something like this…
“H.E.L.P. Need very romantic dinner spot. Great food. Great wine…and hip?? I am flumoxed and being fussy.”
Marcy’s response… “Recette, ask for the corner table in the window.”
So we dined at Recette http://recettenyc.com/on the corner of west 12th, nevermind Miss Marcy that it is smack dead across the street from the brownstone where I lived in with my ex-husband! The decor is very unassuming with an open kitchen where Chef Jesse Schenker lords over the preparations. And… to my absolute delight-the only music played that evening was old school rock and roll.
Although I am a slave to all things classic…for my personal taste, I prefer the classics with a twist. Great service is also critical, but there are many ways to skin the cat -and our tattooed Burt Reynolds look-a-like waiter was right in my wheelhouse. He knew the menu inside and out and recited it as if in some funky play. He also read our energy and hovered in the distance approaching only when we needed something.
The food was truly delicious and if they have the argula salad on the menu when you go…GET IT!! Anyway-Recette is a very refreshing and delightful approach to dining. I have always marched to the beat of my own drum so when it comes to my personal time…indiviuality and simple confidence count. Do yourself a favor this spring and reset your palette with Recette.

And Marcy… keep your eyes peeled for more smoke signals!
