A few weeks ago a friend and I decided to rent a rowboat in Central Park for the afternoon. The sky was a shade of blue that New Yorkers forget exists during the hazy summer and the light was absolutely spectacular. I thought it would be fun to see if I could capture it on film.
The lake is one of the highlights of the park, and many landscaped trails and bridges snake around its shore. I think it is one of the most romantic settings in the city, and the light hit it perfectly on this beautiful afternoon.
The Bow Bridge spans the lake and connects the more landscaped and flowery Cherry Hill with the rustic and wild terrain of the Rambles. The cast iron bridge was built in 1862 and named for its resemblance to an archer’s bow.
As we came out from under the other side of the bridge, we came upon a small wedding under one of the rustic huts on the shore. I knew the spot was a popular choice for proposals but had never seen a wedding there. The couple and their small wedding party could not have found a more special place.
There are locations in Central Park such as the Loeb Boathouse that are rented out for lavish (and expensive) wedding parties, but I wasn’t sure what was required if a couple wanted to have their wedding outside in the park.
With a little research, I found that New York City does allow weddings and other events in city parks but does require a permit. It is a good idea to apply for your event well in advance because some of the locations are very popular. Go to http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_things_to_do/attractions/images/weddings_in_central_park.pdf for the online application and a list of rules. It just goes to show that you can have the most beautiful wedding imaginable if you have the right setting and the people you love with you.
